NOTE:
Depending on how you align the triangles, you can create 3 different patterns.

The finished patterns are available, for free:
Hexagon 1
Hexagon 2
Hexagon 3

This is an example made with the second triangle:
Hexagon 4

Begin by printing this simple equilateral triangle, resizing it if necessary. Right-click on the image below, and select "print" or select "save as," open and print from a graphic program such as MS Paint.

equilateral triangle

Draw anything you fancy. Circles, lines, stripes, branches, stars, rings, ribbons, etc. In the example below, you can see two very different examples that I have drawn and scanned.

Create a new blank file, large enough to fit about 3x the width and height in pixels of the scanned image. Copy and paste the triangle, then copy and paste the same triangle, but after it has been rotated by 120 degrees, and 24 degrees. Move the triangles until they meet at the center as shown below. Merge all layers.

Copy and paste the 3 arranged triangles in a new file. Turn it into a mirror image, and rotate 180 degrees.

Select the black lines only from the mirrored and rotated image. Paste onto the original 3 triangles, and move to fit.

Fix imperfections with the erase and pen tools, and remove unnecessary lead lines where the triangles meet.
