Make your own letters

Adding lettering in your stained glass pattern is simpler than it looks.

Begin by drawing two straight, parallel lines to delimit the top and bottom of your letters. With large, blocky letters that touch each other, and making use of a few foil overlays, you can have some easy lettering that is uncluttered with distracting lead lines.

If you use contrasting colors, the lead lines will become even less apparent:

You don't have to make block letters. You can make more whimsical letters, with few lead lines, again with "fat" letters, each touching another:

You can demarcate the letters using different colors:

If you must have the letters more separated, be aware that you will have considerably more lead lines, and more small cuts. Having horizontal, parallel lines above and below these letters would not fit their freeform, so lead lines go in all directions to accomodate the gaps between the letters. The below is to illustrate an informal lettering style that can be easily drawn and adapted by anyone:

Well-separated letters require more cuts, and more leading, and are clearly read.

Have fun creating letters for your stained glass projects. There should be as much creativity in your letters, as in the rest of your design.
